Theme Assignment
Throughout The Hunger Games the author reveals the influence of our actions and that any act of rebellion has consequences, good or bad. This theme is developed mainly through Katniss. First, Katniss breaks many rules in District 12, one of which is hunting. Citizens are not permitted to leave the fence but Katniss along with her friend Gale spend most of their time hunting and trapping as a way to feed their families. In a way Katniss and Gale are rebelling the Capitols orders. Secondly, this theme is developed after Rue's death when Katniss covers Rue in flowers. “I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do to for force us to do there is a part of ever tribute they can't won. That Rue was more than just a piece in their Games. And so am I” (Collins 237). Even though this was a small action is was Katniss's way of defying the Capitol. Thirdly, this theme is developed when Katniss and Peeta decide to kill themselves with the poisonous berries. Once they find out that there can be only one winner Katniss decides to outsmart the Capitol. They end up being crowned victors but Katniss is in big trouble with the Capitol for her actions and she has and will have a huge effect on others.
The choices we make today can also have great consequences. In our society often people don't think about what they are doing and how it can affect others. Drunk driving is an example. This is against the law and by rebelling in can hurt the driver and in some cases can hurt other people as well. Also, people in society today often don’t think about the influence they leave in the lives of others. There are so many people in history who have stepped out and made a difference in our world but at the time it was viewed as wrong. People in our society need to be reminded that we need to stand up for what is right even if it means “rebelling” because even the smallest actions influence others. The author is not trying to promote rebellion, however, she is trying to reveal the great influence our actions have on others and the consequences they have.

Media Deconstruction
1. This media message was created and paid for by the allied forces to persuade Canadians into to getting wartime jobs.
2. By examining the image it is clear that this poster was made to target Canadians, particularly woman, not serving actively in the war. The woman in the photo is the main factor that indicates that the ad most likely concerns women.
3. The ad depicts a woman working while a man, her boyfriend or husband, is at war. The text states that the woman in the photo is still behind her husband/boyfriend even when he is gone because she is a Stalker.
4. The poster ultimately suggests that helping support war efforts will help bring loved ones back from the war. In my opinion, this message is very effective. First, the text makes people feel guilty because it suggests to the audience that they should be getting a wartime job if they truly care about their loved ones fighting in the war. Second, patriotism is also used to make this photo effective. The photo suggests that not being involved in war efforts is unpatriotic. Thirdly, the ad shows a clear picture of the enormous sacrifices many woman and men made during the 1900s. Men sacrificed their lives and many women sacrificed their time to take on the roles of men while also providing for children.
5. This poster has many positive aspects. It suggests a way to help protect and support men involved in the war and encourages Canadians to take action. However, this poster also suggests that Canadians or woman not working, particularly who are not working for wartime production, are lazy or do not truly care about the men fighting in the war.
6. The story presented on the ad depicts a woman and her willingness to help with war efforts, however, there are many aspects left out of the picture. Many women sacrificed a lot to work during the war. Woman worked in factories and production places while taking care of their homes and children. These women worked in terrible conditions, which in some cases caused death. Woman also worked extensive hours for not much pay at all. In other words the message of the poster leaves out the unpleasant realities that many people faced during the war.
7. The ad uses a lot of visual elements to present its message, for example the faded, dark colours are surrounding the man, representing the dangers of war. The text and its bright colours are used to grab the reader’s attention and the font also plays a big role in the visual aspect. The word “Stalker” for instance is bolded and bigger to make the message more clear and effective.
8. This form of propaganda uses many different tools to persuade its audiences, such as, fear, humor and plain folks. Humans do not like war and the horrible realities of it. The photo reminds its audience of the men fighting and sacrificing their lives in the war. The fear of loved ones potentially dying makes people want to do all they can to help. The poster also uses humor as a persuasion tool. “The girl he left behind is till behind him. She’s a Stalker.” This line catches the audience’s attention and makes them think about the true meaning behind the humor. The audience is also less likely to forget something catchy or humorous, which makes the message much more effective. Also, the characters depicted on the poster are normal, everyday people. The audience would be more difficult to persuade if famous, rich or high-class people were used in the ad, which is why propaganda, often times, uses ordinary people. Using plain folk makes the audience believe that they can be like the characters in the poster and the audience soon buys into the message portrayed, in this case the audience is made to believe that they can stick behind and protect their loved ones fighting in the war by getting a wartime job.
9. This ad portrays a story line. There are characters, the woman and the man and there is also a plot and solution. By examining the text it is obvious the man went to fight in the war leaving his girl waiting for him to return. Being so far away she can’t be there for him so she supports him by becoming a Stalker. The solution, the woman getting a wartime job, suggests to other Canadians that this is what they must do to support their loved ones.
