Part 1 - “The Tributes”
This section of the book takes place mostly in the Capitol where the tributes train and prepare for The Hunger Games, which is why this part is called “The Tributes”. The reader is introduced to many of the characters and how the tributes are treated before the Games begin.
The novel begins in Panem, a nation run by the Capitol which is surrounded by 12 districts. This section of the book introduces the main character, Katniss Everdeen, from the poorest of districts, District 12. Katniss is a sixteen year old girl who has been the primary provider for her mother and twelve year-old sister Prim, since her father’s death four years earlier. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting in the woods with her best friend Gale where they help one another keep their families alive. The book begins on the morning of the Reaping, a holiday set aside to determine the tributes for the annual Hunger Games. Each district draws a male and a female to partake in these games as a reminder to the districts of the Capitols control. Contestants in these games will fight to the death and the last one standing is the winner, who will receive riches for their family and district. Prim is chosen to go but Katniss volunteers to take her place. Peeta, the baker’s son, is the male tribute chosen to enter the games. Although the two never really knew each other Katniss recognizes him as the boy who saved her life. Before Katniss started hunting her family almost died of starvation, one day when she was looking for food in the baker’s garbage Peeta took a beating to throw her some burnt bread. Katniss and Peeta arrive at the Capitol where they go through a series of processes preparing them for the games. They spend time training with the other tributes and they are ranked on their skills. The tributes’ time here consists of impressing the Capitol in order to earn sponsors, who buy things to send tributes in the arena when needed. During her time here Katniss meets her down-to-earth stylist, Cinna, who presents her as “The Girl on Fire”. Before the games Katniss also learns that Peeta is in love with her. Their mentor Haymitch thought the star-cross lover’s act would help them earn sponsors in the games. Katniss has mixed feelings about the whole ordeal but she is determined to stay alive in the games no matter what the cost.

Part 2- “The Games”
This section of the novel is called “The Games” because it takes place in the arena. Throughout the section the reader is introduced to the horrors and struggles of being in the Games.
All 24 tributes have been sent to the arena to begin the Hunger Games. In the beginning Katniss is alone with only a few items in a bag that she managed to take from the Cornucopia. Katniss soon finds out that Peeta has formed an alliance with the Careers, the strong and vicious tributes from the wealthiest Districts. After a few days of surviving attacks from the Gamemakers and struggling to stay alive, Katniss is cornered into a tree by the Career pack. Katniss manages to get away by dropping a nest of tracker jackers (genetically mutated killer wasps) onto them. During the process she is saved by Peeta after returning to take a bow and arrow from one of the fallen tributes, but she can’t seem to remember whether this actually happened or if it was another hallucination from the tracker jacker venom.
After, Katniss becomes allies with Rue, the girl from District 11 that reminds her of her sister Prim. The two exchange supplies and information and soon come up with a plan to take out the Careers' food supply. Their scheme is a success; unfortunately Rue is killed during the process. Katniss is devastated and furious with the Capitol so she honors Rue by covering her body with flowers.
Soon after Rue's death there is an announcement, stating that two tributes from the same district can now be victors. Upon hearing this change Katniss is eager to find Peeta, in hopes of going home together.
